After months, actually years, of anticipating (rather dreading) sending Noah off on the bus for his first day of Kindergarten, today was the big day. I can now say with most certainty that it was far more difficult than I had even thought possible. Strangely enough, for reasons that I hadn't even considered possible. For example, getting a call from the nurse at 10:18 that Noah had passed out only to wake up to his teacher holding him in the middle of the hallway! I bet she hadn't considered that a possibility for her first full day back either! :) And I would be lying if I said that I didn't nearly rear end someone in the process of getting that message relayed. Seriously the tires were squealing and everything! Wouldn't that have been classic?!
And as if that wasn't enough, right around 3:00 when Noah would have been loading the bus to head home for the day, the tornado sirens began to sound leading way for the massive thunderstorm that lasted nearly 40 minutes! Can you imagine?!! The very first day of school the teachers had to keep all of the kids in the hallway for a real, live tornado drill. My friend's daughter rather enjoyed being "turtles" while Noah was not so sure he wanted to have to "stand on his head" ever again. So a day that should have ended with me picking my big Kindergarten boy up at the bus stop at 3:18 left me sitting in a thunderstorm with my two other kiddos in tow for over an hour (it was his first day, my first day, and I was not going to leave that bus stop even if it was down pouring all around me, so sit there we did. :) And a little after 4:00 my boy was home. What a first day!
Did I mention that during all this I bought Noah a book, that was wrapped, and eventually stuck into Aidan's cozy coupe car for our walk before heading to the bus station? Well I did, I wanted today to be perfect. (Yes this was before the sirens! :) Well, somewhere along the 2 block span that we trekked before chaos ensued, I managed to notice the book no longer sticking part-way out of the hood and turned around to retrace my steps, only to find it had vanished into thin air. Seriously, where could it have gone? It was two blocks! Anyone find a soaked book wrapped in abc wrapping paper about the first day of school? Anyone?! :)
So that was our first day. I made it. Noah made it. And tomorrow is going to be far less dramatic. Right?!
And here is my tired boy after his nearly 9 hour day.
